Banner ads are cheap to buy and easy to scale. They are also easy to ignore. Native placements cost a little more per impression, but they earn far more attention. So which one actually delivers?
Attention is the real currency
A banner competes with the page it sits on. A native ad matches the look of that page, so readers process it the same way they process content. That one difference shows up in every metric down the funnel.
What changes down the funnel
- Click-through rate: native and creator-led formats regularly earn several times the CTR of standard banners.
- Cost per click: higher engagement lowers the effective CPC, even when the CPM is higher.
- Conversion: people who click a native ad already understand the offer, so fewer drop off on the landing page.
Where banners still make sense
Banners are not dead. They are useful for retargeting people who already know you, and for cheap reach when awareness is the only goal. The mistake is using them for acquisition and judging them on the same targets as native.
A simple test plan
- Split one month's acquisition budget 50/50 between banner and native.
- Track both through the same MMP or pixel.
- Compare cost per result, not CTR or CPM.
Most teams that run this test move the bigger share to native within a quarter.
